Jason Sheridan Brown is a professor of art who has taught sculpture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, School of Art since 2001. He earned his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1999. His artwork has been exhibited nationally, including solo and group exhibitions in 28 states, as well as internationally in Canada, Germany, and New Zealand.
Brown has participated in numerous artist residencies, including the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Alberta, Canada, and Ucross in Wyoming. His research and artwork explore mountainous landscapes and rural cultures, with projects examining the controversial practice of mountaintop removal coal mining throughout Southern Appalachia.
Brown creates art that invites viewers into conversations about the environmental costs of energy extraction. Combining art and activism, he describes his practice as an art of resistance.
